ACL Festival: Austin's Biggest Party
Austin City Limits is one of the biggest music festivals in the country. Two weekends in October, Zilker Park fills with 75,000+ people per day, and the whole city turns into a live music celebration.
A bachelor party during ACL? It can be amazing — or expensive and exhausting. Here's the breakdown.
What Is ACL?
Austin City Limits Music Festival runs two consecutive weekends in October (same lineup both weekends). Eight stages, 100+ artists, all-day music from noon to 10 PM.
Past headliners: Kendrick Lamar, The Killers, Foo Fighters, Billie Eilish, Paul McCartney, Metallica. Big names.
Festival location: Zilker Park, right in the middle of the city. Walking distance to downtown and South Congress.
The Pros
- Built-in entertainment: The festival itself fills most of your day. No planning required.
- Incredible music: World-class lineup. You'll see artists you'd pay hundreds to see individually.
- Festival energy: The vibe is electric. Everyone's in a good mood.
- Night shows: After the festival closes at 10 PM, artists play late-night shows around the city. The music doesn't stop.
- Story factor: ACL bachelor party is a flex. It's memorable.
The Cons
- Cost: Three-day passes are $300-400+. Single-day passes run $150+. Add that to an already expensive trip.
- Accommodation prices: Hotels and house rentals spike. Expect 2-3x normal prices minimum.
- Crowds everywhere: Not just at the festival — restaurants, bars, and Ubers are all slammed.
- Physical toll: Walking, standing, and partying all day in October heat is exhausting. This is not a chill weekend.
- Less flexibility: If you're doing ACL, your days revolve around the festival schedule.
Budget Reality
Festival tickets:
- Single day: $150-175
- 3-day GA: $300-350
- VIP: $700-1,200
- Platinum: $2,000+
Accommodation: A house that normally runs $400/night might be $1,000+ during ACL. Hotels downtown can hit $500+/night.
Everything else: Ubers surge. Restaurants are packed (and some raise prices). Budget 20-30% more than a normal Austin weekend.
All-in estimate: $1,500-2,500/person for a long weekend with festival passes. Without the festival: $800-1,200.
How to Make It Work
Buy Tickets Early
ACL sells out. Tickets go on sale around May for October festivals. Don't wait until summer and expect to find passes at face value. You'll be paying resale prices (or skipping the festival entirely).
Book Accommodations in Spring
Good houses and hotels get booked 4-6 months ahead for ACL weekends. If you're planning for October ACL, start looking in April or May.
Pick Your Weekend
ACL runs two weekends with the same lineup. Weekend 1 tends to draw bigger crowds and has fresher energy. Weekend 2 is slightly more manageable and sometimes has lower prices. Neither is calm, though.
Stay Close
Location matters during ACL. Stay within walking or easy Uber distance of Zilker Park and downtown:
- Downtown
- South Congress
- Zilker/Barton Hills area
- East Austin
Staying far out means fighting traffic and surge pricing all weekend.
Plan for Recovery
ACL days are 10+ hours of walking, standing, and drinking. Build in recovery time:
- Morning pool/brunch before the festival
- Don't schedule early activities
- Have food and drinks at the house for late nights
Itinerary Option: ACL Bachelor Party
Friday:
- Arrive, settle in
- ACL Festival (3 PM - 10 PM)
- Late-night show or Rainey Street
Saturday:
- Late start, brunch
- ACL Festival (noon - 10 PM)
- After-party or 6th Street
Sunday:
- Recovery morning, Barton Springs, tacos
- Optional: ACL for a few hours
- Flights out
Or skip a festival day entirely and do the classic Austin activities (lake day, BBQ, etc.) while still enjoying ACL energy in the city.
VIP vs GA
Is VIP worth it for a bachelor party?
VIP perks:
- Dedicated viewing areas (closer to stages)
- Private bars and bathrooms
- Air-conditioned lounges
- Free food options
- Easier experience overall
The math: VIP is about $400-800 more than GA per person. For a bachelor party, that extra comfort can be worth it — you're there to celebrate, not suffer.
If budget allows, VIP makes ACL feel less like survival mode and more like a party.
If You Skip the Festival
You can plan a bachelor party during ACL weekend without going to ACL. The city is energized, late-night shows are everywhere, and the vibe is still festive.
Benefits:
- Save $300-400/person on tickets
- Do classic Austin activities without the festival grind
- Still enjoy the energy and nightlife
- Catch a late-night show instead
Downside: You'll be surrounded by people talking about ACL. FOMO is real.
The Verdict
Do ACL weekend if:
- The groom loves live music
- Your crew can handle a physically demanding weekend
- Budget isn't the main constraint
- You plan and book early
Skip ACL weekend if:
- You want a more affordable trip
- You prefer a chill pace
- Your group doesn't care about the music festival experience
- You're planning last-minute
ACL adds a layer of intensity to an already great city. For the right group, it's legendary. For others, a different weekend might be better.
